Modern JavaScript frontend frameworks became the go to solution for a new generation of web developers - but how can we as a community make Drupal relevant to them?

Nuxt.js is an intuitive, Vue.js based framework. It's the perfect choice for the frontend of our decoupled Drupal stack using custom elements markup.

When it comes to decoupling, it turns out there are many options on how to decouple. Not only are there many technology choices in choosing the right frontend framework and APIs involved, the questions become also more foundational: Which system should be in charge for handing different aspects of the applicaiton, e.g. routing, placing blocks or authentication?

Drupal Europe is the main gathering of the European Drupal Community of this year. People from the European and global Drupal community collaborate together on tackling challenges and engage in order to make Drupal grow both as a technology and as a brand.

Vorige Woche hatten wir das Vergnügen zusammen mit 2300 Drupal Entwicklern die diesjähre europäische Drupalcon Amsterdam zu besuchen. Neben der Vielzahl an gewohnt hochqualitativen Vorträgen und BoFs, war das Highlight der Konferenz das Release der ersten Beta-Version von Drupal 8! Die Konferenz war ein gute Gelegenheit um zusammen mit Kristof De Jaeger (swentel) und Yves Chedemois (yched) all die Neuerungen rund um die Entity Field API zu präsentieren. Unsere Session war ein Neuauflage unserer gelungenen Präsentation in Portland und ein voller Erfolg. Für alle, die die Session verpasst haben gibt es glücklicherweise ein Recording.

Im Rahmer der CodeWeek.eu organisierte Drupal Austria organisierte einen ganztägigen, kostenlosen Workshop um einen perfekten Einstieg in das frei verfügbare Open-Source Content Management System Drupal 8 anzubieten und so den Entwicklungsstandort Wien zu fördern. drunomics unterstütze die Veranstaltung und ich durfte den TeilnehmerInnen "Coding mit Drupal 8" näherbringen. Inzwischen hat Drupal Austria auch die Aufnahmen des Workshop veröffentlicht und das Resultat kann sich sehen lassen: 4 Stunden hochqualitatives Drupal 8 Schulungsmaterial.

vagrant is great when it comes to pre-configuring reproducible, and portable development environments for Drupal - in particular in combination with Ansible. However with sites of a decent size the performance of Drupal projects running on the NFS share vagrant uses for shared folders has become more and more of an issue - at least with Virtualbox. syncd forms a simple, pre-configurable solution that automatically syncs changes into the vagrant box, such that the files can be served from the regular VM filesystem instead.

As previously announced on the IKS blog I’ve been recently working together with Stéphane Corlosquet on integrating the tools provided by the IKS project to do semantic content enhancements in Drupal as part of the IKS early adopter program. The Interactive Knowledge Stack (IKS) project is an open source community which got funded by the EU to build an open and flexible technology platform for semantically enhanced Content Management Systems. Thanks to IKS, open source projects like Apache Stanbol, VIE.js or Create.js got started. While VIE.js and Create.js are already on their way to Drupal 8 via the Spark initiative, our focus was on integrating Apache Stanbol with Drupal 7. In short, Apache Stanbol is a java web application that leverages tools like Apache Solr, Apache Tika or Apache OpenNLP to provide a set of reusable components for semantic content management via RESTful web services. On the front-end side, VIE.js (“Vienna IKS Editables”) is the JavaScript library for implementing decoupled Content Management Systems and semantic interaction in web applications.
